For Employees Relocating from Taiwan & Asia

Taiwan to Phoenix — Practical Relocation Guide

Approximately 2,200 Taiwanese employees have moved to Phoenix since TSMC's arrival. This guide covers what they say surprised them — and what to do in the first 30 days.

The short version: Approximately 2,200 Taiwanese employees have moved to Arizona since TSMC announced its campus in 2020. Taiwanese businesses, boba tea shops, and Asian grocery options have emerged in North Phoenix strip malls. Real estate developers are converting a mall into an Asian shopping center. A community is forming — faster than most relocating employees expect.

The First 30 Days — Practical Checklist

Driving in Arizona — What Surprises Taiwanese Drivers

Phoenix is not walkable. A car is not optional — it is your lifeline to work, groceries, school, and everything else. The sooner you are licensed and comfortable driving, the better your daily life will be.

The Taiwanese Community in North Phoenix

When TSMC announced its Arizona campus, North Phoenix had almost no Asian grocery infrastructure. That has changed significantly since 2022. Per reporting in the New York Times and Taiwan News, Taiwanese businesses now dot North Phoenix strip malls along the I-17 and Carefree Highway corridors. Supermarkets have begun stocking Taiwanese food. A developer is converting a mall near the campus area into an Asian shopping center. Boba tea shops, Taiwanese restaurants, and businesses serving the community have opened and continue to open. Mandarin is heard at daycare centers and schools near the fab.

The community pattern from Hsinchu — where TSMC's Taiwan headquarters is located — is partially reproducing in North Phoenix: technical families in proximity, a shared culture, community spaces emerging around food and language. It is not Hsinchu. But it is no longer the culturally isolated situation employees faced when they first arrived in 2022.

Asian Groceries & Taiwanese Food

The Asian grocery infrastructure in North Phoenix has improved significantly since 2022 but is still developing. Current options:

Phoenix Weather — What to Expect from Taiwan

Taiwanese employees arriving from Hsinchu or Taipei experience Phoenix climate as genuinely extreme — in both directions. Summer highs regularly exceed 110°F (43°C) from June through September. Winter lows occasionally reach near freezing at night from December through February, though snow is essentially unknown in the Phoenix metro. The Norterra and Cave Creek corridor sits at roughly 1,800–2,100 feet elevation — slightly cooler than downtown Phoenix, but the difference is modest.
